How to make a Car Insurance Claim?

The claims procedure for car insurance will vary from provider to provider, and you should always ensure that you are fully aware of the claims process when you purchase your policy.  Like all forms of insurance, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the claims process at your leisure, so that when the worst does happen, you need not worry about making a claim.
  • Always contact your insurer as soon as possible after the accident.  Don't feel restricted to calling during office hours, as most car insurance providers will have a 24hr claim line.

  • Once you've reported the incident, you will be sent an accident form, which you should fill in as completely as possible, and return to your insurer as quickly as possible.

  • Make sure you know exactly what sort of information your insurer will require of you, so that you can gather the appropriate information.

  • Keep all relevant documents and reports pertaining to the accident, and make a second copy for your own records for future reference.

  • If your vehicle requires repairs and your policy provides the necessary cover, then do not assume that you can take your vehicle to any repair shop for the work.

  • Your car insurer will be able to recommend a number of repair shops in your area, where your car can be fixed.  In the meantime, depending upon the type of policy you have purchased, your insurer may provide you with a courtesy car until the work is complete.

  • Alternatively, your insurer may allow you to shop around for several repair quotes, however, in order for them to pay out for the repairs, you will require written confirmation from your insurer that it is ok to proceed with the repair of your vehicle.

If you have third party insurance and the accident was not your fault, then you will need to make your claim through the other driver's insurance as they will be making the claim to cover the cost of your repairs.
