Third Party Car Insurance

A third party accident is an accident which involves, in any capacity, another individual or group of individuals. This need not necessarily be another motorist and could be a pedestrian, cyclist or even a passenger within your vehicle.

Both 'third party' and 'third party fire and theft' insurance policies are designed to protect victims of accidents, so that they have means of claiming compensation in the event of an accident. By taking out either of these types of policy you will meet the minimum legal requirements demanded for your insurance protection.

Third Party car insurance will cover your liability against any damage to another party. It will not, however, not provide any insurance protection for yourself or your vehicle. The basis behind 'third party' insurance is to protect you, the driver, against any claims that may be made against you in the event of an accident.

Certain 'third party' insurance will also provide cover to drive other cars, which have a 'third party' cover policy, and therefore, conversely, allow other individuals with 'third party' insurance to drive your vehicle. With 'third party' protection, if you are involved in an accident which you are directly responsible for, then your insurers will pay all costs which you are due to pay by law to the relevant parties.

In addition, if your car is stolen and the thief causes an accident, then your policy will cover you for any damages made by the thief in your car. To protect people involved in an accident, the law demands that injured parties are able to claim compensation. This means that irrespective that you were not to blame for the thief's accident, your insurer will be there to provide compensation to those effected.

Third Party policies will also protect any damage caused by passengers within your vehicle; so, for example, in the event that a passenger damaged another car when opening your door, then your third party cover will provide the relevant cover. It is important to stress that third party car insurance is the minimum level of car insurance you can buy, and you will not receive any form of compensation for the damage or loss of your own car, nor for any accident or injury to yourself. While third party insurance is by far the cheapest type of insurance, in the long terms it can be far more economical to purchase a higher level of cover such as fully comprehensive or third party, fire and theft, which will provide you with compensation for damage to your car.
